The January 9, 2015, election in Bayelsa has broken the chain of order and unwritten code of command among ex-militants in the Niger Delta. High Chief Government Ekpempulo, also known as General Tom Polo, is widely held as the overall commander and also the marshall of the Western flank, while Alhaji Asari Dokubo, leads the Eastern Flank and in close alliance with General Tom Polo. These two agitators are widely loved and respected in local communities in the Niger Delta and have all received several chieftaincy titles for their struggle for resource control, especially during the military regime of Genereal Sani Abacha.
The new tensions in the region are purely political. It is an obvious fallout from the governorship elections in the Bayelsa state. The APC in Bayelsa state has accused Dokubo and Tom Polo of drumming support for Governor Seriake Dickson. The new tensions are coming from a different direction.
Immediately after the Bayelsa state supplementary elections, our reporters gathered that one Samuel Ogbuku, chief of staff to former governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, arranged a meeting with Bayelsa militants in Port Harcourt. The agenda of the meeting was to help his friend and fellow NURSEMEN comrade, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, who is preparing to challenge Gov. Nyesom Wike, in a rerun in Rivers state, should the Supreme Court uphold the judgement of the Rivers State Elections Triunal which nullified the election of Governor Wike.
The recruitment of the Ogunboss and Africa by Ogbuku and Peterside to check the probable entry of Asari Dokubo and Tom Polo into the Ijaw areas of Rivers state in the coming elections has led to the renewed hostilities in Delta state. The strategy of the General Africa is to unsettle Tom Polo’s territory enough to get the area sufficiently militarized, and then get the APC politicians to push for the declaration of Tom Polo as a wanted man to freeze his movement during the Rivers election.
So far, Ogunboss and Africa have commenced the sponsored bombing oil and gas installation in Delta state under the watch of the JTF in the area. Tom Polo and Asari Dokubo have all called for peace in the region. Scribe of United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Summit (UNDEDSS), Mr. Tony Uranta, has called the renewed hostilities a “false flag operations” intended by the APC administration to invade the Niger Delta and possibly declare a state of emergency in the region. In a statement released on his Facebook wall, Uranta reminded the Niger Delta people of Hiter’s “False Flag Operations” and how Nazi Germany employed same to justify her blitzkrieg attack on Poland. He ended his statement assuring that “The Niger Delta is NOT at war with Nigeria!”
The Council of Ethnic Leaders (CEL) has also called on the minister of transport, Chibuike Amaechi and Hon. Dakuku Peterside to immediately stop the evil plot. Leader of the Council HRH Isreal Bokuku Alamie warned that the invasion of Rivers communities by unknown military squads, and the plot to set up Tom Polo for refusing to join the APC is “undemocratic and evil.”
The APC Chairman in Rivers state has denied that the party has any hand in the renewed hostilities, but said that party supports the military effort in rooting out criminal elements in the state. He refused to comment on their meeting with General Africa and Ogunboss.
