On February 9, news of the death of four Reverend Sisters, who died in a fatal auto crash along Ogoja/Ikom highway in Akwa Ibom State, went viral on social media.
The story was widely circulated as to how the sisters died in a head-on collision involving the Avensis vehicle they were travelling with and a delivery truck of a bottling company. What was not told the public was why the Avensis was in the break-neck speed that made the collision so devastating.
Today, truth has emerged as to how the actions of some drunken Policemen at a road block led to their death. Michael Imoh, a bus driver based in Ogoja, was on the route on the day of the accident. He reached out to Biafra Family Writers expressing surprised that nobody has told the public the truth of what took place on that day.
Imoh said Police authorities should ask their men who were on duty at the area on that day what actually transpired between the Police and the ladies. What really happened, he said, was that the highly inebriated Policemen on road-block were chasing the Sisters with their patrol vehicle when the accident occurred.
According to Imoh, trouble started when the drunken Policemen flagged down the Avensis vehicle at the road-block. Claiming to be on “a searching mission”, they ordered the ladies to disembark for search. Two of the ladies first came down, and were taken to the side of the road (very near to the bush), to be searched. Indeed, one of the Policemen called “Dauda” decided to take one of the ladies further behind their vehicle because he suspected she could be carrying a bomb. The lady obeyed.
But within seconds, the lady bolted away from him, went back to the car and sat down sulking. She said she was not ready for anyone to touch her again in the name of searching. She expressed unhappiness that a Police man that should be on duty would be using his official hours to get soaked in alcohol. She called to her partner to get back to the car that nobody was going to search them again.
Imoh reported that Dauda, who was reeking of alcohol, insisted they must be properly searched, that “their behavior’ had made him more suspicious of what they could do. Imoh said he was part of the members of public who stopped by to beg the Policemen to leave the ladies alone as their calling did not necessitate them being treated that harshly. Dauda insisted that he must search them; but the lady stood her ground wanting to know what kind of ungodly search he was conducting. “What kind of search is it of a Policeman attempting to put his hands in a lady’s private parts and trying to push her down into the bush” she queried.
It was at this point that the driver of the vehicle got angry and drove off with the ladies. Not satisfied, Dauda and a colleague jumped into their patrol van and gave chase. The result was the fatal accident.
