Unknown Gunmen Strike Police Checkpoint in Anambra, Injure Officer and Torch Vehicles

A police checkpoint in Ajali, located in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was attacked by armed assailants.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday. Ikenga, who holds the rank of Superintendent of Police, reported that two security personnel were injured during a gunfight and are currently receiving medical attention. He noted that one of the victims is a police officer, while the other is a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group. “During the exchange of gunfire, a police officer and an AVG operative sustained gunshot wounds and are being treated in a hospital,” he stated. “Regrettably, the two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were caught in the flames and were completely destroyed.” A Sienna vehicle was also set on fire during the assault at the police checkpoint in Ajali. According to the police statement, the assailants were intercepted on Thursday on the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road. “Upon searching the vehicle, we found coolers for food preservation. The armed men were pursued after police operatives thwarted an attempt to attack the police checkpoint at Ajali,” the police spokesman added. He indicated that joint operations in the region are ongoing, with further updates to be provided. Anambra is among the South-Eastern states experiencing a surge in violence attributed to gunmates include Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi.Despite the deployment of security personnel, the assailants have continued their attacks.
